Dental crowns are single-tooth restorations that can strengthen a tooth after treatment from damage or decay, support an adjacent bridge, or restore a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. Our doctors can place durable, esthetic dental crowns to restore the beauty and function of your smile. Contact Westchase Esthetic Family Dentistry to learn more about dental crowns.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap. While a dental filling restores a small area of damage, and an inlay or onlay repairs the chewing surfaces of teeth, a dental crown covers an entire tooth.
For anterior (front) teeth, we usually use esthetic all-ceramic crowns for a realistic appearance. For the posterior teeth, we typically place press crowns, which consist of a ceramic shell over a strong zirconia base. We may also use all-zirconia crowns for your back teeth, because they are especially strong.
Dental Crown Candidates
You may be a good candidate for a dental crown if you:
- Have a severely decayed tooth, and have undergone a root canal.
- Have cracked, chipped, or broken a tooth.
- Are missing a tooth, and wish to replace it with a single dental implant-supported crown.
- Are missing several teeth, and you wish to use crowns to anchor a dental bridge without an implant.
- Have a tooth in need of extensive esthetic enhancement. A crown can cover a tooth and give it a new shape, or cover intrinsic stains that do not respond to teeth whitening.
Placing a dental crown requires thorough examine your tooth with our advanced X-ray machine or intraoral camera to plan your procedure. If the tooth is affected by decay, we will remove the damaged areas and clean it. Once all signs of decay and infection are gone, we will shape the tooth so the crown can fit comfortably over it. Next, we will take an impression of your treated tooth. If you are missing a tooth and replacing it with a dental implant, we will take an impression of the implant and the surrounding teeth. Our lab will use this impression to manufacture your custom crown. The crown will be secured using durable dental cement. To complete the process, we will polish your crown and make any necessary adjustments. Patients usually notice the benefits of their crown right away. The crown will restore a proper balance between the upper and lower jaws, and match your surrounding teeth to look absolutely natural.
